There are many benefits of a latex mattress, firstly it’s a natural material, and latex is made from the sap of the rubber tree. Latex mattress also has no chemical flame retardants, no chlorinated or brominated solvents. When sleeping on a latex mattress, the surface of the natural latex mattress conforms to your body. Inside the Spindle Latex Mattress

The Spindle Mattress is a natural organic mattress, made from 100% natural latex, organic cotton and eco-wool. The materials used means no chemical flame retardants, no synthetic rubber and no harmful VOCs. Let’s take a look inside the Spindle Latex Mattress.

First there is an organic cotton circular knit fabric top, the cotton is GOTS Certified and knitted in South Carolina. This soft top gives the mattress a soft cushioning top and a comfy feel to sleepers. Inside the knit fabric, it is stuffed with pure eco wool batting stitched inside an organic cotton fabric and is placed above the natural latex. The wool is Oeko-Tex Certified, Eco-Wool Standard and carded in California.

Now we get to the natural latex layers, there are individual layers of natural latex foam, each latex foam is 3 inches high. Depending on the mattress firmness you choose, these layers will reflect it. The 3” natural latex foam are made from Dunlop latex, Oeko-Tex certified, rainforest alliance, FSC and manufactured in Pennsylvania.

Spindle Latex Mattress Layers

Spindle Latex Mattress Firmness

The Spindle Latex mattress is available in Medium and Firm, with the medium firmness being the most popular choice for those who share their mattress. Since you need to assemble the mattress after it is delivered, its very easy to adjust the firmness, if you find its too soft or too firm. Depending on the firmness selected, the 3 layers of natural latex foam will vary in firmness. For example, with the Medium firmness level, the 3 layers of natural latex foam will be the following: –

  • 1 layer of Medium 3“ Natural Latex Foam
  • 1 layer of Medium 3” Natural Latex Foam
  • 1 layer of Firm 3“ Natural Latex Foam

If you find that the firmness isn’t firm enough, then you can move these layers around and test each combination until you find the right firmness comfort for you. The medium firmness level is ideal for those who sleep on their side and back, and sits at 6.5 on the mattress firmness scale. We do not recommend this firmness level for those who sleep on their stomach, as it will be too soft.

Below is a breakdown of the layers for each firmness level:-

Spindle Mattress offer a 365-night risk free trial, so if you find after adjusting the layers, the firmness is still not right for you, contact Spindle Mattress and they will gladly help to modify the mattress. This may involve sending a firm layer, so you can replace a medium layer with the new firm layer and see if this helps with the comfort. Spindle Mattress is a premium 10” premium all-natural latex mattress, and wants to ensure their customers are satisfied with their purchase.

Can I get split firmness on my Spindle Mattress?

Spindle can offer a split firmness on their mattress, but only for a King size mattress, as those sharing  mattress may sleep in the middle of the mattress and may end up sleeping on 2 different firmness, instead of 1, which isn’t great your back and sleep. For customers who want a split firmness, we found that the most popular option is to split the bottom 2 layers of the mattress and keep the top layer as a solid piece to keep the layers together. There is also an additional fee for requesting a split firmness, an additional fee of $50/layer, so 2 layers would add an extra $100 of the cost of your mattress. If you are interested in a split firmness, then you will need to call or email Spindle Mattress directly, so they can handle the specific request accordingly.

Mattress Performance

Edge Support

As natural latex is naturally compressive, you may find that you do sink on the very edge of the Spindle mattress. There is no additionally boundary that can provide further edge support so if you are a sleeper that enjoys sleeping on the edge this mattress may not be for you. However, it does have a great bounce to it which is because of the latex. Therefore, the latex makes it easy for you to move around and find your perfect sleeping position.

Material Quality

The Spindle Natural Latex mattress is made of Dunlop latex.  Its latex sheets are available in two firmness levels: medium and firm thus allowing the sleeper to choose which level they would prefer. The quilted top layer is made of organic cotton which is produced without pigments, bleach or pesticides and the circular knits maintains the integrity and the feel of latex. Alongside this, there is a natural wool batting that comes from sheep raised in the Pacific Northwest- in accordance to the Eco-Wool Standards. The wool batting provides a chemical free fire barrier for your protection.

Motion Transfer

The Spindle mattress is great at isolating motion which allows for you to have a great, undisturbed sleep. Yet, it is recommended that if you have a partner that frequently moves around during the night to purchase a larger model of the Spindle mattress.

Off Gassing

As it is natural latex, you may find a slight smell coming from your mattress upon your initial delivery. However, this smell will dissipate quickly.

Temperature

As this mattress uses natural wool batting, it retains moisture which allows you to keep warm during the winter months and cool during the summer. Yet, as this product does not have any type of specific cooling properties it may not keep you as cool as other mattresses.

Trial

Spindle do not offer your standard ‘free-trial’ period. Two ‘trial’ programmes are offered for the consumer that allows you to find the perfect mattress for a great night’s sleep. A 365-day Comfort Adjustment period which allows customers to switch one of the three latex layers for a different layer of firmness. Spindle work with you to find your perfect comfort level for your mattress.

In addition, a 30-night break-in period is required for the comfort adjustment to be redeemable. Customers cannot substitute mattress layers or request a full refund until they have tested the mattress for a least 30 nights. After this ‘break-in’ period ends, the customer can return the mattress for a full refund throughout the remainder of the 365-day comfort adjustment period.

Moreover, Spindle offer a 25-year comfort life program which enables customers to substitute the latex layers in the mattress for 25-years at a 30% discounted price. You are able to receive an unlimited amount of latex replacements at a flat-rate 30% discount.

Warranty

Spindle offer a 10-year warranty from the date of purchase. If you face any issue such as a deep sinking impression on your mattress, Spindle will replace the materials free of charge. Normal wear and tear, sheet-fit or body impressions are not covered by the limited warranty. For a full in-depth overview of their warranty, it is recommended for the consumer to go on the Spindle website.

Bed Frame Compatibility

Latex mattresses are quite heavy, so they need much more support than a normal box spring mattress. Using support bases such as slats, centre legs, platforms and centre rails can be incredibly beneficial in assuring that your mattress is properly supported. A latex mattress can contort to any shape of whatever is underneath it, unlike a traditional stiff mattress.

If you do not use the correct base you may find that your mattress will sag or create impressions which can result in discomfort. It is recommended that you use a base that use solid wood slats- at least 3 or 4 inches thick- that are spaced no more than 3 inches apart. Alongside this, a rail underneath the slats laying across with two supports underneath will guarantee you with a safely and comfortable supported mattress.

A box spring is not recommended as they do not have the correct structure to support the latex mattress.

How to look after your Spindle Mattress

Over time you will notice your mattress will feel softer, this is normal, latex is estimated to soften 15% over a ten-year period. Memory foam tends to soften by roughly 30% and mass market polyurethane roughly 60%. So, it’s important to have a regular mattress maintenance routine, to keep your mattress feeling fresh and long lasting.

DO NOT wash your mattress cover

The first big rule for your Spindle Mattress is NEVER wash the mattress cover. Your Spindle Mattress comes with a mattress cover, which keeps all the layer together. Therefore, its important to NEVER wash the mattress cover, NEVER soak it, NEVER put it into a washing machine. But sometimes accidents do happen, and what do you do if there is a spillage on your mattress cover. Never fear, if there is a spillage, then here are a few ways to clean it:

  1. Combine half a cup of baking soda with 10 drops of essential oil, shake and mix. Then gently sprinkle the mixture over the stained section. Leave the mixture for a few hours and then shake the top outside or gently vacuum it up. Careful not to damage the cover
  2. If the stained area is wet, then gently blot the area dry with a clean towel. After cover the area with salt, you heard correctly salt and leave it on for 4-6 hours. Then shake it off or vacuum carefully.

If the above sounds like a long process for you, then we strongly suggest investing in a good mattress protector. A washable, waterproof mattress protector can save you from the above hassles, if there is a spillage, simple remove the mattress protector and wash. Its that simple, no hassle with towels and vacuums.

How to make your Spindle Mattress last longer?

Over time your mattress may wear down a bit, to reduce this its very important to frequently rotate your mattress, since the Spindle Mattress isn’t flappable, make sure to only rotate your mattress. If you are forgetful like me, then make it a routine to rotate your mattress every time you change your bedding. But if you are a frequent bedding changer, then set a reminder to rotate your mattress every three months. Below are specific mattress maintenance, depending on the firmness of your mattress:

If you have a Medium Spindle Mattress

  • Make sure to rotate your mattress every 3 months
  • Try to rebuild your mattress every 6 months
  • To rebuild, swap your top and middle layers or any other layer

(Don’t mix the layers up often, as this may mess up the mattress comfort)

  • If the weather is nice, remove the mattress cover and hang it outside.

If you have a Firm Spindle Mattress

  • Make sure to rotate your mattress every 3 months
  • Try to rebuild your mattress every 6 months
  • To rebuild, swap your middle and bottom layers, as they have the same firmness
  • You can also flip the middle layer
  • Make a note, in the next rebuild, flip the top layer, restore middle layer to its previous position
  • If the weather is nice, remove the mattress cover and hang it outside.

If you have a Soft or Extra Firm Spindle Mattress

  • Make sure to rotate your mattress every 3 months
  • Try to rebuild your mattress every 6 months
  • Move the middle layer to top, bottom layer to middle and top layer to bottom. As they are all the same firmness
  • Flip a layer, the middle or the bottom layer
  • Then on the next rebuild, repeat steps 1 and 2
