It’s time to make an investment in your sleep. Toss out your old mattress and replace it with modern technology. We suggest you have a look at the Helix range of hybrid mattresses. Helix has thousands of verified customer reviews, rating them as one of the best mattress manufacturers.
The customization on offer from Helix allows you to select the ideal mattress for the ultimate sleep experience. Memory foam mattresses are the industry benchmark, but many customers find that old memory foam models don’t provide sufficient airflow throughout the layers, resulting in temperature fluctuations that wake you up in the night.
Helix blends the best of both worlds, with innersprings supporting the advanced open-cell memory foam layers. The result is a range of mattresses that offer outstanding support, comfort, and value for your money.
In this in-depth review of the Helix range, we” discuss the features and benefits of each model, and then take a closer look at the Helix “midnight” – our top pick for the best Helix mattress.
Helix Mattress Comparison
Before we discuss our favorite mattress in the Helix range, let’s introduce you to the other models available from the brand.
This mattress is the entry-level product in the Helix range. However, don’t take the lower price tag as a sign of inferior quality. The Sunset is the ideal mattress for side sleepers that require extra pressure relief on the shoulder and hips. The memory foam plus layer provides a soft pillow top that allows you to sink into the surface of the mattress.
When the Helix engineers sat down to design this mattress, they did so with the side sleeper in mind. The middle and top layers of memory foam provide greater levels of cushioning, allowing your hips and shoulders to sink further into the bed, dispersing the pressure over the sleeping surface to reduce tension. The result is a comfortable but supportive mattress that leaves you feeling refreshed in the morning. The Helix Sunset is best for side sleepers and those people that find that they toss and turn throughout the night. Reviews show that customers liken sleeping on the soft pillow top to floating on a cloud. So, if you shift around while you sleep, then the Helix will support you in any position. People who prefer a firm mattress should look into other products in the Helix range.
- Excellent support and pressure relief for side sleepers.
- A 10-year warranty and a 100-night sleep trial.
- Made in the USA.
- Free shipping.
- Not suitable for those people that enjoy a firm mattress.
The Helix Moonlight is a softer version of the Sunset aimed at back and stomach sleepers. Both of these sleeping positions have unique requirements to assist with the spinal alignment of the sleeper. In the case of the Helix Moonlight, the company’s engineers decided to adjust the memory foam layers to a softer level of support.
Some back and stomach sleepers that prefer a firmer bed may want to look at other models like the Dusk instead. However, if you enjoy a soft bed, then the Moonlight is like, “sleeping on a marshmallow.”
Despite its soft and luxurious feel, we were surprised to find that the mattress still managed to allow for optimal airflow throughout the night. The open-cell, gel-infused foam in the top layer kept us cool while wicking away moisture from the surface of the mattress.
The body contouring foam allows us to sink into the mattress, but the resilience and bounce of the base enable us to get out of bed without that feeling of being bogged down. Edge support reduces due to the softness of the pillow top, but it still provides sufficient support when lying in bed.
- Excellent support and spinal alignment for stomach and back sleepers.
- The 10-year warranty and 100-night sleep trial.
- Not suitable for those that enjoy a firm bed.
- Less edge support than other models.
The Helix Dusk is the most popular model in the range. This mattress offers a balance between firmness and softness, resulting in a bed that’s slightly on the softer side of the firmness scale. The medium feel of the Helix Dusk makes it ideal for back and stomach sleepers that may find the Helix Moonlight too soft for their taste.
The engineers at Helix made some fine adjustments to the memory foam in the Dusk, providing the sleeper with a firm, but supportive sleeping surface. The soft top layer contours to your body, with excellent resilience that results in no sagging over the lifetime of the mattress.
Back and stomach sleepers are a hard crowd to please, but Helix has a model to suit any firmness preference. The Dusk is the top choice for those sleepers that like a medium-firm sleeping experience.
The Dusk still retains all of the premium materials and features found in all of the other Helix models. The breathable cover, gel-infused memory foam, provides a comfortable sleep experience with optimal airflow through the mattress.
- The 10-year warranty and 100-night sleep trial
- Suitable for back and stomach sleepers
- Medium firmness making the Dusk the most popular Helix model
- Too firm for side sleepers
This mattress earned the prestigious honors of, “Best Mattress for Side Sleepers,” in the 2018 Mattress Advisor awards. The Twilight rates as a 6.5 to 7 on the firmness scale, and suits side sleepers that prefer a sleeping surface with very little give or sink.
While it may seem like a firm mattress is a bad idea for side sleepers, the engineers at Helix made adjustments to the memory foam layers that allow for optimal spinal alignment while sleeping on your side. The specialized foams remove pressure from the hips and shoulders, dispersing it across the sleeping surface.
The Twilight also features the same breathable materials that provide optimal airflow through the mattress layers. This bed sleeps cool in the summer and retains warmth in the wintertime.
The genius in this mattress comes in the transition layer. This foam provides ergonomic support and cushioning, with a higher IFD to suit your weight and body type. Due to the firm sleeping surface and coiled springs, the Twilight has excellent edge support when lying in bed and sitting on the edge of the mattress.
- Award-winning mattress.
- Firm sleeping surface with excellent pressure relief.
- Suitable for side sleepers.
- Not suitable for those that prefer a soft bed
The Dawn has the highest firmness rating in the Helix range, measuring at a seven on the firmness scale. This mattress offers excellent spinal alignment and support for back and stomach sleepers.
Stomach sleepers may find that they sink too far into memory foam mattresses. As a result, it places their spine and neck at an angle, and they may wake up in the morning with a stiff neck. However, sleeping on a firm surface sorts this issue, relieving any pressure on the base of the neck.
The Helix Dawn features two layers of memory foam designed to provide support to the spine while contouring to the body. The resilience found in the specialized memory foam ensures that your mattress does not sage for the duration of its service life. The coiled springs in the base provide excellent stability and motion transfer, isolating any movement.
Finished with the same breathable, hypoallergenic, removable cover, the Helix Dawn ensures you get a dry, comfortable night’s sleep, without the worry of waking up sweating during the night.
- Firm sleeping surface – 7 on the firmness scale
- Excellent spinal alignment for back and stomach sleepers.
- A 10-year warranty and a 100-night sleep trial.
- Not suitable for side sleepers or those individuals that prefer a soft bed
Helix Mattress Comparison
Helix Midnight – An In-Depth Review
After reviewing every mattress in the Helix range, we had to settle on a favorite. Our choice for the best bed in the Helix stable – is the Midnight. This model has a medium firmness and is the second best-selling mattress in their lineup. Here is our comprehensive review on the Helix Midnight, we hope you gain enough insight to make an informed purchase decision on this mattress.
- An excellent choice for any sleeping position
- Good balance between firmness and softness.
- Optimal airflow and breathability through all layers of the mattress.
- Great edge support.
- Affordable considering the amount of technology involved in the mattress design
- Free shipping in the United States.
- Heavy and challenging to move around
- Not suitable for those people who like very soft or overly firm beds.
- The sleep trial has a 30-night break-in period.
The Helix range of mattresses uses hybrid technology in the design and construction of all of its products. Many people like memory foam mattresses, but all of that dense foam in the base makes the bed heavy. The foam base also struggles to disperse heat, which is one of the reasons why memory foam mattresses are known to “sleep hot.”
The addition of coiled springs in the base of the mattress reduces the total weight of the bed while improving the airflow in the layers of the mattress. As a result, you have a bed that provides excellent levels of comfort and support, while allowing for optimal airflow through the springs and memory foam layers.
Hybrid mattresses have the best of both worlds, innersprings on the base, with soft, comfortable layers of memory foam on top.
Mattress Layers & Material
The materials found in the Helix Midnight are second to none. The base features high-density foam with individually wrapped coils that provide edge support and limit motion transfer.
The transition layer between the springs and the memory foam top features ergonomic properties that conform to your body type. Finally, the mattress features a comfort layer of 2.45 PCF’ Helix Dynamic Foam.’ This proprietary foam is a blend of polyfoam and synthetic latex, providing a soft but bouncy sleeping surface.
Instead of using different foams or constructions in their range of mattresses, Helix decided to alter the firmness of the foam in the top two layers to adjust for different sleeping styles and preferences. It’s the only difference in construction and design in the range.
The Helix Midnight comes encased in a combination cover. The outer layer features a soft-touch top cover that has excellent stretch. The under-layer provides excellent breathability and airflow.
When it comes to assessing the performance of the Helix Midnight, we have to say that we are impressed with what’s on offer. The mattress does require a break-in period of 30-days, so it’s best to only make your final judgment on the product after you complete your 100-night free sleep trial.
We found the Helix Midnight to be the ideal mattress for those people looking for a medium to medium-soft bed. If you’re a back, stomach, or side sleeper, this mattress does a marvelous job of aligning your spine while relieving pressure points.
The soft top layer conforms to your body, preventing you from tossing and turning while you sleep. The transition foam layer provides excellent motion transfer while preventing you from sinking too far into the mattress.
One of our pet peeves of memory foam mattresses is the way that we seem to get bogged down in the middle of the bed. This flaw in design makes it a hassle to get out of bed in the morning, making it feel like you’re trying to escape quicksand. However, the spring base in the Midnight provides excellent resilience, giving you the bounce you need to get out of bed with a bang in the morning.
We found that the airflow in the mattress was excellent, and we never woke up in pools of our sweat, like with other memory foam mattresses. The soft cover combined well with our sheets, and we noticed no cross-movement between the cover and our sheets while moving around in bed.
The Helix Midnight features class-leading edge support. Many memory foam mattresses fail this test miserably. There’s nothing worse than rolling to the edge of the bed, only to find you gain momentum and land on the floor. This weak edge support is a problem in many of the softer memory foam mattresses available from leading manufacturers.
With the Helix Midnight, you can relax knowing that the edge support keeps you in bed, where you belong. The edges on this mattress are so firm that you can even sit on the side of the bed while you do your make up or put on your shoes. The coiled springs in the base, along with the high-density polyfoam ensure that you don’t slip off the side of the mattress.
Helix ensured that they used only the best materials in the construction of their mattress range. The Midnight, along with all the other mattresses, come with award-winning open-cell memory foam technology.
The layman may not understand the technology that goes into modern memory foam formulations. Today’s advanced memory foams sleep cooler than previous generations, and engineers have higher levels of versatility in managing the properties of the foam.
It’s for this reason that the engineers at Helix were able to manipulate the firmness of their foams, without resorting to additional materials or changes in mattress design. The breathable outer cover consists of two layers, with leading design technology that allows for optimal airflow while wicking away moisture from your body.
Customers can relax with the knowledge that all Helix mattresses are sourced and assembled in the United States, and the brand cuts no corners to compromise on its quality. All materials used in the production of the Helix Midnight have certification with the CertiPUR-US program to maintain the best safety standards in the industry.
The transition layers and coiled springs found in the base of the Helix Midnight do an excellent job of absorbing motion transfer. If you wake up every time your partner gets out of bed, then it’s because your mattress does not transfer the motion throughout the layers of the mattress, resulting in your feeling when your partner moves in bed.
The individually coiled springs and transition layers of foam absorb this movement, isolating it to a localized area while leaving you undisturbed. Motion transfer is our barometer for mattress performance, and it’s how we can get an understanding of the hidden layers of the mattress we are looking at in a store.
However, the construction of the Helix Midnight ensures that we don’t feel any movement across the sleeping surface, or in the deeper layers of the mattress. To test the motion transfer, we place a bowling ball in on one side of the bed and then lay next to it. If the bowling ball doesn’t move, then we know that the mattress has excellent motion transfer, as is the case with the Helix Midnight.
When manufacturers produce mattresses, they may use materials and adhesives that gas-off to form VOCs, (volatile organic compounds.) Most VOCs found in beds are typically harmless and present no risk to your health.
It’s important to note that while the manufacturer allows for gassing off at their production facility before they pack your mattress. However, some residual VOCs may remain, and when you unpack the bed, you may notice a “new-car smell” fill the room.
In most cases, these VOCs gas-off within 72-hours, and it’s completely safe to sleep on the mattress during this period. If you are concerned about the smell, open a window in the room, and you’ll notice the VOCs escape quickly into the atmosphere.
Firmness and Support
Selecting the right firmness and support is the most crucial aspect of choosing the perfect mattress. You base your choice of firmness on your sleeping position and your personal preference for a sleeping surface. Some people prefer soft beds, while others like theirs as firm as a rock.
As with everything in life, we find that a balance between the two provides us with the best sleeping surface. The Helix Midnight has a medium level of firmness that may be a touch toward the softer side.
When laying down for the first time on the Helix, (after we let the mattress expand for 5-days after unboxing,) we discovered that the top layer of the mattress was soft and comfortable. However, we did not sink into the mattress very far, and we found that we could move around freely in bed, without feeling like we are sleeping in quicksand.
As far as support goes, this mattress provides the ideal amount of targeted support in the core and thighs to prevent sagging while maintaining optimal spinal alignment. For those people that sleep on their side, the Midnight offers excellent pressure relief to the hips and shoulders.
When it comes to value for money, you can’t beat the price of the Helix Midnight. All of the mattresses in the Helix range are available at affordable prices, and they offer promotional discounts during the holidays – Look out for a 4th of July sale!
When we look at the kind of technology on offer in the memory foam and mattress construction, we feel that the Midnight offers excellent value for money in the mid-price range for a memory foam or hybrid mattress.
All Helix mattresses come with a 100-night sleep trial. However, it’s important to note that it takes 30-days for your bed to settle, and your sleep trial still runs during this time. Therefore, it’s a prudent strategy to make your purchase decision after the second month of sleeping on the Helix Midnight.
Taking a sleep trial is an excellent way to get a feel for your bed without committing to a purchase. Since most mattress manufacturers are confident that you will love their product, they only bill you after the trial is a success.
As previously mentioned, older generation memory foam has a reputation for sleeping hot. When memory foam mattresses first came onto the market, people were amazed by the softness and comfort of the material. However, after unpacking their bed at home and sleeping on it for the first night, many users find that they wake up in the middle of the night feeling hot.
Memory foam technology has come a long way since its inception. Today’s memory foam formulas involve intricate scientific technology that improves airflow through the mattress layers. Open-cell memory foam allows for optimal airflow, while the breathable cover ensures that there is no buildup of body heat in the mattress.
The gel-infused foam found in the Helix Midnight disperses body heat throughout the mattress, keeping you cool while you sleep. As a bonus, the moisture wicking materials found in the outer cover keep your dry.
Like most other mattress manufacturers, Helix provides you with a 10-year warranty on their mattress. The warranty is only valid against manufacturer faults; such as tears or stitching mistakes. If you damage your bed through wear and tear or abuse, the Helix is not liable.
Helix Luxe Mattress
The standard line of Helix hybrid mattresses includes a firmness grading to suit the needs of any sleeper. Considering the mattress measures only 10-inches thick, it’s surprising it has such a high level of comfort and pressure relief.
Helix also looks out for its customers that demand luxury in their lives. All six Helix models are available in the “Luxe” version for additional comfort and enhanced performance – with a significant increase on the price tag.
However, you get what you pay for, and Helix over-deliver with their Luxe upgrade on the Midnight. The Luxe comes with a pillow top that’s remarkably plush and soft. Helix also includes a gel-infused memory foam layer and a second comfort layer of Helix Dynamic Foam for additional support.
The Helix Midnight Luxe edition is well worth the extra money, and we feel that the Luxe is almost an entirely different product offering.
In a nutshell, the Luxe model is more of everything, with zoned and pocketed multi-gauge coils. This zoned effect provides additional support to the core and limbs while allowing more pressure relief in the upper body and pelvis. The 14-inch Luxe edition of the Midnight is a significant upgrade to an already fantastic mattress, and it’s a side sleepers dream come true.
Helix not only produces a full range of mattresses, but they also offer a variety of four pillows to accompany your new mattress purchase. All Helix pillows come with a 3-year warranty and a 100-night sleep trial. Here’s a breakdown of each of the features found in Helix pillows.
Adjustable Design Pillow
The adjustable design pillow is our favorite in the lineup. This Helix pillow is ideal for stomach sleepers that require a thinner profile on their pillow. Stomach sleepers experience the worst spinal alignment of all sleeping positions, and they frequently wake up with a stiff neck.
Those stomach sleepers that regularly experience neck pain and discomfort may want to consider trading in their current pillow for a thinner version. This pillow offers three setups to suit the sleeping style of any user. Select from any one of the following combinations.
Two Support Insert Layers – This insert set up suits side sleepers with broad shoulders for maximum support.
One Support Insert Layer – The most common assembly. Best for combination sleepers and back sleepers.
No Support Insert Layers – This pillow is suitable for stomach sleepers. The inner lining offers enough comfort and support for stomach sleepers.
We like this design for stomach sleepers. It’s a great set up for guest houses or luxury boutique hotels, providing your guests with any pillow height they require. If you’re a side sleeper, this pillow allows you to stack the inserts to provide enough support between your head and the mattress, allowing you to maintain optimal spinal support.
There’s nothing quite like the luxurious, plush feel of a down pillow. It’s no wonder that this style is one of the world’s favorites. With its down pillow, Helix takes a great product, and makes it fantastic, with unique 3-chamber design. The pillow features an inner case of down and feathers, blended for optimal support and comfort. The two outer cores feature white down for that heavenly-soft feel against your face.
Down pillows are easy to plump up and manipulate to provide your neck with the support you need, regardless of your sleeping position. The Helix Down pillow puffs up readily, ensuring your upper back and neck have an optimal spinal alignment for a comfortable night’s rest.
One of the reasons why down and feather pillows are so popular is because they have such a long lifespan. It’s strange that people would consider the lifespan of their pillow, but rarely that of their mattress, (something to think about when investing in your Helix Midnight.)
The Helix down pillow comes with a standard 3-year warranty against manufacturers defects. You also get a 100-night sleep trial with the down pillow to see if it’s right for you. Featuring a hypoallergenic outer cover made from pure cotton fabric that ultra-soft and lightweight. The down pillow is an excellent choice for back or side sleepers.
The down and feathers used in this pillow are incredibly resilient to ensure your pillow keeps its shape and feel longer than most standard pillows. The double stitched reinforced edging and German piping help the pillow retain its shape.
Do you live in a warm part of the country? Waking up in the middle of the night to find your pillow soaked in your sweat is uncomfortable. Lying there with wet hair and a soggy pillow is not an option, so drying off and changing the pillowcase is your only option.
This situation is a common scenario when people decide to use the wrong pillow for climate conditions. Sleeping with a down pillow in your beachfront villa on a hot, humid night, isn’t such a great idea. Fortunately, the savvy engineering team over at Helix noticed a gap in the market for breathable pillows. The result was the launch of the “Ultra-Cool” Helix pillow.
This pillow features top-quality ultra-cool knit polyethylene outer fabric that feels cool to the touch. It’s like sleeping on a breezy marshmallow that lets the air flow around your head, keeping you dry. The pillow cover is breathable, allowing air to circulate through the insert layers, dispersing heat out into the bedroom, instead of trapping it in the pillow.
The Ultra-Cool pillow has the same adjustable pillow inserts as the adjustable pillow mentioned above, allowing you to select the height that suits your sleeping style and bodyweight.
Have you ever been lying in bed watching TV or reading a book, and you can’t seem to get the pillows to feel comfortable? Helix has thought of everything and everyone when it comes to creating their pillow line.
The “wedge pillow” is a unique design meant to support your lifestyle. The pillow has a firm, supportive, and flat surface that allows you to spread your upper back and shoulders across the surface for optimal pressure relief while sitting up in bed or lying on the couch.
Helix built the wedge pillow with functionality in mind. It’s for this reason that they added a layer of premium, gel-infused memory foam in the top layer of the wedge. This foam helps to disperse body heat, preventing your back or shoulders from becoming sweaty.
There are plenty of uses for the Helix wedge pillow. Use it to support your upper or lower body, and reduce tension in your lower back and shoulders from reading in an elevated position in bed.
The wedge is also an excellent choice for anyone living with GERD, as the elevated sleeping position helps to avoid acid reflux entering the esophagus. The wedge pillow also helps to elevate the chest and open the airways, preventing snoring.
Helix Mattress Review - Wrap Up
Choosing a new mattress is a significant lifetime investment in your health. If you think about it, we keep our cars for three to five years, and the biggest purchase of our lives – our home, only sticks around for 7 to 15-years on average. With this in mind, doesn’t it make sense to spend a little more on your mattress?
With this in mind, it’s pleasing to see so much technology on offer in the Helix range, at an affordable price. Even the Luxe range of 14-0inch mattresses offers excellent value for money. If you’re currently sleeping on a bed that’s more akin to a wooden board, then consider purchasing the Helix Midnight as your first entry-level hybrid mattress.
The Midnight has everything the average person needs. It suits any sleeping style and offers a plush sleeping surface that will give you countless restful nights. We give the Helix Midnight an 8.5/10 for all-around value and performance – Highly recommended.
