Cariloha Mattress Review
If you’re a fan of Cariloha classic and resort sheets, then you’re going to be thrilled with their new deluxe memory foam mattress. It’s time to toss out your old bed and buy a mattress that’s guaranteed to give you a good night’s rest.
The Cariloha mattress features intuitive design, with a medium-firm memory foam that suits any sleeping position. The pressure relieving memory foam conforms to your body contours, giving you that “sinking-in” feeling that allows you to sleep “in” your bed, not “on” it.
In this review we look at the top features and benefits of the Cariloha mattress, and whether or not it meets the criteria for your new bed.
Cariloha Bamboo Mattress
The innovative charcoal bamboo mattress from Cariloha offers a sleep experience that’s cleaner and cooler than any other memory foam mattress. From its unique design to the quality materials used in construction, the Cariloha focuses on airflow, while relieving pressure.
The Cariloha bamboo mattress promises a new revolution in memory foam technology. Available in sizes from twin to king, the Cariloha offers a luxurious sleep experience. As a premium brand, we expected nothing but the best design and construction from the Cariloha mattress, and we weren’t disappointed.
The Cariloha mattress features a five-layer design. The base layer offers a unique approach to managing airflow through the bed. The top half of the bed has perforated grid cut-outs in the Flex-flow dual density base foam. This feature provides exceptional airflow through the top layers of the mattress, allowing you to sleep much cooler than other memory foam products.
The top layer of hypoallergenic bamboo charcoal infused memory foam provides a “sinking” feeling when climbing onto the mattress. You’ll notice that the memory foam, takes a few seconds to reform back into its natural shape after you relieve the pressure. This slow-moving action allows you to sink into the bed, even though it has a medium-firm rating. The bamboo-charcoal infusion also provides excellent airflow through the top layer as well.
The dual-density foam allows for firm support on the lower half of the base, with the perforated layer on top being slightly more forgiving to allow for a gentle transition that cradles the spine. We could really feel the difference in airflow in this mattress compared to other models.
On top of the base layer, lies the bottom layer made from perforated, hypoallergenic, natural latex foam. This layer helps with the responsiveness of the top layers, providing more shape and balance to the mattress.
Between the top and bottom layers lies another layer of soft, slow-moving memory foam that contours to your body while providing superior pressure relief that melts away any shoulder discomfort from sleeping on your side.
Cariloha keeps things together using firm side wedges along the lower sides of the mattress. These wedges provide support to the mattress construction and prevent the layers from shifting over time. The edges won’t fail, even with you sitting on the corners of the mattress.
Lastly the mattress is wrapped with a viscose bamboo cover that allows for excellent airflow distribution while wicking away moisture. The bamboo charcoal infused fabrics prevent dust mites from colonizing in the bed while reducing odors from sweat.
Cariloha Mattress Product Range
So, how does this mattress perform, and what are the key design elements that make this mattress standout from other products in the same category? We measured up the Cariloha mattress to nine criteria to form our final opinion. Read on to make an informed purchase decision based on our assessment of the performance of the Cariloha mattress.
- Exceptional breathability and airflow through the mattress. This feature makes it the best in its class for memory foam mattresses that sleep cool.
- The soft memory foam in the top two layers allows you to sink into the mattress, providing contoured support with a “hugging” feeling.
- Optimal motion isolation.
- Not recommended for those that prefer a soft mattress. If you are looking for a softer version, try the 12-inch size. The additional two inches of memory foam in the top two layers drop the firmness from a 6-7 to a 5-6.
- No “bounce.” The Cariloha mattress features slow-moving memory foam in the top two layers with slow resilience.
- Not available as a single.
Most memory foam mattresses end up with distortions on the edges and sides from people sitting on the edge of the bed. It’s not like thi9s happens suddenly, it’s a slow progression over about four or five years that you probably don’t even notice.
Unfortunately, this bulging of the edges makes it difficult for sheets to fit properly in the corners. Worse yet, the internal layers also start to separate and shift away from each other. As a result, you may begin to lose efficacy and resilience towards the edges of the mattress in the top and middle layers.
Fortunately, it pleases us to see that Cariloha understands this issue. They included edge support in their mattress, through the use of firm side-wedges, that prevent the side walls from collapsing under the weight of someone sitting on the edge.
With the Cariloha mattress – you get what you pay for, and then some more. This mattress contains design technology and materials that are on the cutting edge of memory foam mattress manufacturing.
With specially designed perforated memory foam in all four layers each have individual properties that complement each other, and the entire package is nothing short of outstanding value for money. The hypoallergenic bamboo-charcoal infused memory foam is an innovation in airflow management and comfort for memory foam mattresses. We expect that this style of mattress materials to become the new benchmark for memory foam mattresses from all manufacturers.
The bamboo provides exceptional airflow through the mattress, allowing you to sleep cooler than most other memory foam mattresses that are known for sleeping hot.
After using the Cariloha resort and classic sheets for the last few months, we weren’t disappointed by the design and comfort on offer from the mattress cover, its soft enough to sleep on without sheets.
The top two layers of memory foam in the Cariloha mattress offer a slow-responding reformation after relieving the pressure from the surface. However, the bed provides superior motion isolation, and if your partner were to move during the night, the chances are you wouldn’t notice.
We feel that the excellent edge support, combined with the dual-density base foam absorb all movement, localizing the effect to the immediate area without transferring motion to other areas of the mattress, even when your sleeping close to your partner.
The contouring effect of the top 2 layers allows you to sink into the bed. However, the firmness gives you the support you need when you need to get up, without leaving you feeling unbalanced or “bogged down,” as you might find in softer memory foam mattresses – and the 12-inch version of the Cariloha. We think that the 10-inch thickness is an ideal balance between comfort and functionality.
“Off-gassing” describes a term where mattresses leach volatile organic compounds, (VOCs.) Common VOC fumes include toluene, formaldehyde, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and benzene. While most mattresses do some form of off-gassing due to the glues and materials used in the construction of the bed, most of it occurs in the factory, not in your home.
As a result, you can unpack your Cariloha mattress, without the fear of VOCs entering your room and your lungs. However, we still recommend that you leave your mattress to breathe for a few hours before fitting your sheets.
The manufacturer compresses the mattress before packing into the box for shipping. When you receive your mattress, you open the box, add the mattress to the frame of your bed, and let the memory foam expand on its own.
The whole expansion process may take around 36-hours, and it won’t damage the mattress if you sleep on it during the expansion.
One of the biggest complaints about memory foam mattresses is the fact they sleep hot. Memory foam is not a very breathable material, and most people find that they tend to sweat more when using a memory foam mattress due to the lack of airflow between the layers.
The grid-style cut-outs on the dual-density foam base, along with the breathable bamboo-charcoal infused memory foam allows for superior airflow. This construction and material design enable you to sleep cooler on warm nights.
The addition of the bamboo cover wicks away perspiration and increases airflow through the mattress.
Most manufacturers of top-quality beds are so confident that you’ll love sleeping on their mattress – they’re willing to give you a sleep trial to prove their claims. Cariloha is no different, and they offer a 100-night sleep trial on their new memory foam mattress.
That’s nearly three months of sleeping to determine if the beds right for you or not. Speak to your dealer about terms and conditions that may apply to the trial term.
In terms of value for money, the Cariloha mattress is a fantastic deal. The free trial period and the warranty on this mattress rival any top-tier memory foam mattress. Most retailers offer free shipping with purchase.
The Cariloha memory foam mattress comes with a 10-year warranty that covers manufacturers faults and any delamination in the layers. The A Cariloha mattress comes built to last, and you can expect a long service life from this memory foam mattress.
Firmness and Support
The 10-inch Cariloha mattress rates between a 6 and 7 on the firmness scale. This rating means that the mattress has a firmer feel to it than most other memory foam mattresses. The top two layers of foam are soft but supportive, and the dual-density base adds the additional firmness.
IF you press your hand into the mattress, you’ll find your palm sinks into the memory foam. Remove your hand quickly, and you’ll see that it takes a while for the foam to rebound to its previous shape. This design feature of the memory foam layers means that you get the feeling of sinking into the mattress while still receiving firm support for your spine.
The 12-inch version of the Cariloha mattress has an additional two-inches of memory foam in the top two layers. While this may not sound like much of a difference, the impact is very noticeable.
The 12-inch model is far softer, with less support and motion transfer when getting out of their bed, and we would rate it between a 5 and six in firmness. However, the mattress still offers outstanding performance for those sleepers that enjoy a softer sleep experience form their bed.
Compare Cariloha Bamboo Mattress
The Cariloha Bamboo Mattress and Sleeping Positions
People sleep in three different positions – on their side, stomach, or back. Each of these positions has different styles as well.
People who sleep on their side may do so in the fetal position, or with one or both of their limbs facing the bottom of the mattress. They may tuck their bottom hand under their pillow, or extend it in front of their body. People who sleep on their stomach may sleep with their face down or to one side to allow for better breathing.
Whatever your style of sleeping, let’s review if the Cariloha suits your position.
The Cariloha Bamboo Mattress for Side Sleepers
People who sleep on their side tend to experience their shoulder going numb from sleeping on a firm mattress. As a result, these individuals resort to using pillows for additional support to relieve pressure on the shoulder while they sleep.
It’s common for side sleepers to stuff pillows between they’re knees to support their hips, as well as a pillow next to their chest to rest the top arm on during the night. The Cariloha mattress eliminates this need for extra pillows with its memory foam layers that feature unique design and construction for pressure relief.
The side sleeper sinks into the top two layers, relieving pressure, while the hips and spine still receive the right amount of firmness and support to ensure optimal alignment.
The Cariloha Bamboo Mattress for Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers typically prefer firmer beds because their head either faces down into the pillow or to the side, placing their neck at a poor angle for spinal alignment.
As a result, some stomach sleepers may find they start to develop issues with the nerves in their neck and shoulders, and they may wake up with neck pain in the morning.
The Cariloha mattress provides stomach sleepers with firm support during the night, and the sink of the memory foam means that some stomach sleepers may find they don’t even require a pillow.
For those stomach sleepers that don’t use a pillow, they’ll benefit from the improves airflow through the mattress, as well as the hypoallergenic properties of the memory foam that keep away mites.
The Cariloha Bamboo Mattress for Back Sleepers
Back sleepers that enjoy a firm bed will adore the Cariloha mattress. The soft, sinking layers of memory foam allow you to sleep “in” the mattress, instead of sleeping “on” it.
The memory foam contours to the body, relieving pressure on the lower back and hips while supporting optimal spinal alignment. The slow-moving memory foam provides less stress to the Achilles, and back of the ankles for people who sleep with their feet facing up.
The foams low resilience means that there’s less motion transfer when your partner gets out of bed in the middle of the night.
Difference between the 10inch and 12inch mattress
The 12-inch and 10-inch mattress feature the same design elements – but with more an inch more foam in the top two layers. The extra foam on offer gives the bed a softer feel, downgrading its rating from medium-firm to medium-soft. People that find the 10-inch variant to be too firm may find that the 12-inch option suits them perfectly.
The price tag is where you’ll notice the primary difference between the 10-inch and 12-inch models, with some retailers charging up to 50-percent more for the 12-inch over the 10-inch price. Still, considering the excellent design and construction of this mattress, it’s worth the extra money.
Cariloha Bamboo Mattress Review - Wrap Up
If you’re shopping for a new memory foam mattress, then consider the Cariloha for your shortlist of potential candidates. We think the 10-inch model offers excellent value for money that places it head and shoulders above the competition. The revolutionary materials, design, and construction in this mattress mean that it provides perfect performance over decades of use.
The Cariloha is one of the few mattresses that’s ideal for people that sleep in any position. The softness of the top two memory foam layers, in conjunction with the dual-density base, allow you to enjoy the comfortable, sinking feeling of the foam, along with the firm support of the base layer.
We rate this mattress as a 4.5 out of 5 stars for all-around performance and fantastic airflow that you won’t find in some of the more expensive premium memory foam mattresses.
