Best Hybrid Mattress Review (2022)
If you are a sleeper who sleeps in lots of different positions and prefer a mattress made from a variety of materials, then a hybrid mattress may be best for you. In our Best Hybrid Mattress Review, we review our picks of the top hybrid mattresses and include a guide on how to pick the best hybrid mattress. There are a few factors to consider when looking for a hybrid mattress, as some hybrid mattress can be pricey and if you purchase one that isn’t suitable for your sleeping position, it could cause discomfort. Let’s have a look at these factors
Mattress Bounce
What you want to avoid at all costs is a mattress that sinks upon pressure and hardly bounces back. A sunken mattress that doesn’t contour to your body will hurt your spine, in the long run, considering the spine often takes the shape of the surface you are lying on. This is why you need a mattress with a significant bounce effect, not only for your spine but also for durability. A mattress bounce works by deflecting pressure back to the direction in which the pressure was applied thus preventing sagging.
Mattress bounce and responsiveness are closely related aspects of a mattress with the latter referring to how quickly your mattress adjusts to changes in pressure. Responsiveness is particularly relevant in mattresses that allow the sleeper to sink. Such mattresses should come with quick responsiveness to adjust to rapid changes in pressure and sleeping styles. Some mattresses come with a lower degree of bounce and responsiveness compared to others. Depending on the type of sleeper you are, it is prudent to make these considerations before making a purchase.
Motion Transfer
The last thing you want when you are dead asleep is being woken by your partner’s movements as they adjust to their favorite sleeping position. This is why you need a mattress with the least motion transfer to minimize the disturbances caused by your partner’s movements. Motion transfer refers to the amount of disturbance transferred from one section of your mattress to another especially when you have a sleeping partner. The perfect hybrid mattress will absorb the energy from your partner’s movements ensuring that you are not bothered at all when they change positions. Of course, all offerings in the market come with a certain degree of motion isolation capability but some are better than others. This makes it important to shop around a lot before settling on a specific mattress.
Mattress Firmness
Mattress firmness refers to that immediate feel when you first lie on your mattress. It differs from one mattress type to another making it an important factor to consider when choosing a mattress. What might feel luxuriously soft to you may be uncomfortable to the other person. When picking a mattress, it is important to choose the firmness that suits your sleeping position and other personal preferences. The ideal firmness should strain your muscles less and promote circulation. A firm mattress best suits back sleepers who need a stable and even surface that prevents their lower back from collapsing and compromising their oxygen intake during sleep.
Mattresses can be soft, medium, or firm. Firmness falls under a scale of 1-10 with 1 being the softest and 10 being the most firm. Well, unless you are shopping online, you don’t need to trouble yourself with the interpretation of the firmness scale. By just lying on a mattress, you can almost immediately tell whether the firmness suits you or not.
Springs In Hybrid Mattress
Hybrid mattresses come in many different types, but virtually all of them use steel coils for the spring layer. In regard to these coils, some mattresses use pocket springs where each coil lies within its own protective sheath while others use open springs where the coils are exposed within the layer. The former provides zoned support, while the latter can offer more bounce. The foam types used in hybrids can vary but usually include polyurethane or memory foam. In some cases, a hybrid mattress might use latex instead of foam.
The layer of springs in a hybrid mattress adds an extra level of breath ability that helps increase comfort and maintain a consistent temperature throughout the night. At the same time, it is worth noting that hybrids tend to be firmer than memory foam mattresses alone. If you sleep primarily on your back, have a spine issue, or tend to snore often, a memory foam mattress might be a better choice in terms of giving you something that cradles your body and helps to adjust your posture through the night.
When compared to a traditional spring mattress, a hybrid mattress often has better softness and much better breath ability. Spring mattresses provide a higher level of firmness to those who prefer not to sink into the mattress at all. However, unless the spring mattresses have pocket coils, they tend not to distribute weight as effectively as a hybrid. For most sleepers, a hybrid mattress is preferable, even if it comes at a slightly higher cost.
Both stomach and side sleepers can benefit from the softness and contouring a hybrid mattress provides. The use of cooling gel in some models and the general breath ability of the spring layer does a good job of making sure that multiple sleepers do not overheat the mattress. Thus, individuals who sleep with a partner should enjoy a hybrid unless one partner tosses and turns a great deal.
Sleeping Position
Noticed that you often retreat to the same old sleeping position regardless of the many different positions you try before finally falling asleep? Well, over the years people adapt to one comfortable sleeping position that becomes their default position for years.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers find the relaxation they need from sleeping on their backs with their heads, neck, and spines aligned in a neutral position.
The most common sleeping position for those who snore and have sleep apnea, a lot of sleepers who sleep on their backs will have snoring issues and may suffer from back pains, due to sleeping on the wrong type of mattress, so its important to do research before purchasing. For people who sleep on their back, the top layer of the mattress doesn’t need to be too thick and can be thinner, a layer of 1 inch would be perfect.
Side Sleepers
The other common types of sleepers are stomach and side sleepers. Sleeping positions should inform the kind of hybrid mattress to get for your bed. Your mattress should perfectly complement your sleeping position to avoid waking up with all the signs of a terrible mattress even when you just replaced your old mattress.
Get this; 74 percent of people prefer sleeping on their side, with 16 and 10 percent sleeping on their stomachs and backs respectively. For side sleepers, the main goal is finding a mattress that eases the strain on their shoulders, spine, and hips.
For customers who sleep on their side, its important to find a mattress which provides support to your shoulders, side and hips, otherwise this could cause discomfort and poor sleep. Side sleepers will need a mattress with great softness and comfort on the top, you can also have a look at Pillow Top Mattresses, as these have great softness on top and superb support underneath. Apart from soft, the top layer of the mattress also needs to be thicker, ideally 3 inches thick.
Stomach Sleepers
Not many people sleep on their stomach and this sleeping position is quite unique, as many have found this position quite uncomfortable for their necks and arms. For stomach sleepers, a mattress with a firmer top would be best, as they require more support. A mattress at a firm level, with a plush top would be perfect, as this will provide great support and then a nice soft plush comfort on top.
There are tons of disadvantages that come with sleeping on your stomach. Regardless, a good hybrid mattress should help minimize the discomfort of sleeping on your stomach like neck stiffness and back pain.
Combination Sleepers
The most popular sleeping position of them all and the hardest to find the perfect mattress for. It is hard to find a mattress for combination sleepers because you may find the mattress fits for when you are sleeping on your side, but then not comfortable for your back, so it may take longer to find the best mattress. Luckily a lot of mattress brands offer sleep trials, so it will be easy to test and try some mattresses first.
Combination sleepers will need a mattress that has great firm support, this will be provided by high quality innersprings, next the mattress will need to have a good transition layer, so the mattress is comfortable and the sleeper will be able to sink into the mattress and still have great pressure support.
What is a Hybrid Mattress?
When looking for a hybrid mattress, it’s important to first understand what a Hybrid Mattress is, as you may find that its not suitable for your sleep. A hybrid mattress is a combination of different mattress materials to create the best comfort, this combination could be memory foam with pocketed springs, or springs, latex and memory foam. A hybrid mattress with a combination of springs and memory foams creates a mattress that offers great bounce and softness on top.
At the same time, buying the wrong hybrid mattress can leave you with a sense of discomfort for many nights on end, potentially even causing pain in your neck and back due to a lack of proper support. As you search for the best hybrid mattress, consider the following advice before making your final purchase.
Hybrid Mattresses Online
During your mattress buying journey, you will see lots of hybrid mattresses online and sold via online only. This may put you off purchasing, as you would want to try the hybrid mattress first and get a feel of it. However never fear, most of these online only mattress companies offer sleep trials, where you can try the mattress for a certain period and then if you find it’s not for you, you can return the mattress for a full refund, make sure to check if the mattress company offers free return. For example, DreamCloud offers 365-night trial, and this takes effect 30 days after delivery, as it usually takes 30 days for your body to adjust to the mattress. If you find the mattress is not for you, then DreamCloud will collect for your mattress and give full refund. So, you can relax and try the mattress and enjoy the sleep trial.
Below are our top 7 Hybrid Mattresses, all these hybrid mattresses are sold online and offer at least 100 night sleep trials. A few of these mattresses are slightly priced over $1000, but luckily we also have our best hybrid mattress under $1000 review.

The DreamCloud mattress provides a high number of foam layers to add extra comfort to the five-zoned coils near the bottom of the mattress. This mattress features coils that are cushioned on either side by memory foam, which increases the ability of the mattress to properly distribute weight. This is a good option for heavier sleepers as well as people who like the feel of a coil spring mattress but want something softer on their bodies. The mattress lands between a 6 and a 7.5 on a 10-point firmness scale, meaning that those who prefer softer mattresses may wish to look elsewhere.
The eight layers of the DreamCloud mattress include a tufted cashmere blend cover to provide softness, followed by gel-infused memory foam for temperature control. Next comes a layer of quilted memory foam to assist with body contouring, followed by some natural latex for additional cushioning. A layer of “Dream Plush” supporting memory foam provides firmness, while the next layer of dense memory foam helps separate the softer layers from the coils. The “Best Rest” coils provide zone support. They are cushioned by the bottom layer of high-density memory foam, which assists with motion transfer.
Customer Review
“I ordered a mattress and then found our California King frame broke in our interstate move. The new mattress was in transit, but I couldn’t find any CAKing frames I liked, although there were plenty of great King frames. DreamCloud let me refuse shipment and took the other mattress back. I got the size I wanted with no hassle and no charge. I don’t think we will ever need their comfort warranty, but, if we did I am confident the experience would be great.”

Featuring a proprietary technology called the Smart Comfort Grid, the Purple mattress is one of the newer hybrids on the market. The foam grid provides excellent zone control and better airflow than most other types of mattress. This makes it ideal for people who sleep on their backs or sides or who shift frequently during the night. The Purple mattress has a cover made of viscose, polyester, and polyester-vicra that maximizes breathability. The Smart Comfort Grid comes next, with the depth of the grid depending on the firmness level you prefer. If you want a mattress that provides good spinal support and you either sleep with a partner or just want little motion transfer in your bed, you should consider one of the hybrid mattress models listed above.
Frequently asked questions
Are hybrid mattresses good?
Overall Hybrid Mattresses have received positive reviews, as they offer sleepers the choice of sleeping on mattresses made from a combination of foam, springs, latex etc. So, if sleepers are not comfortable on a full memory foam mattress, then a hybrid mattress with memory foam and innerspring might be more suitable.
Is a hybrid mattress good for side sleepers?
Yes, most hybrid mattresses are good for side sleepers, as they have a plush top layer and then great support with the innerspring layer.
Is a hybrid mattress good for back pain?
Overall a lot of hybrid mattresses are good for back pain, as a majority offer a choice of firmness, so you can choice the right firmness for your back. Hybrid mattresses are very comfortable, as the first layer of the hybrid mattress are usually a plush foam layer, that will provide body contouring and mould to your body shape. Thus, filling in the gaps on your back, whilst you sleep.
Are hybrid mattresses better than foam?
Hybrid mattresses are much cooler than full foam mattresses, as there are gaps for air flow between layers within a hybrid mattress. So, if you prefer sleeping cooler, then a hybrid mattress would be better than a foam mattress, which doesn’t have a cooling feature.
Do hybrid mattresses need a box spring?
This depends on what the hybrid mattress is made of, most hybrid mattresses don’t need a box spring, as most hybrid mattress have an innerspring layer and using a box spring would make the mattress overall too springy.
Are hybrid mattresses worth the money?
If you sleep better and comfortably on a hybrid mattress, then yes, it is worth the money, as this type of mattress fits your body and sleeping needs. A hybrid mattress also lasts longer, as it is made from different types of materials e.g. innersprings, foam, latex etc.
Can you flip a hybrid mattress?
Depends on the individual hybrid mattress, most of these are non-flappable, as the top layer is often a plush memory foam layer and then a layer of innersprings. However, it is best to rotate your hybrid mattress, as this will extend the life of the mattress and give you better sleep.
Mattress Type Alternatives
For those who are curious about alternative mattresses beyond hybrids, the most popular options include memory foam, spring, or latex.
Memory Foam Mattress
Memory foam mattresses resemble most hybrids, but lack a spring layer. Instead, these mattresses replace the springs with an additional layer of supportive foam. Memory foam mattresses tend to be very durable, with long-lasting warranties to help back up the purchase. In terms of price, they are usually comparable to or slightly less expensive than hybrids. A memory foam mattress often feels softer than a hybrid, even if the relative firmness is the same.
Full memory foam mattresses work best for those who don’t mind a feeling of sinking into the mattress when they sleep. This is often especially nice for stomach or side sleepers. At the same time, memory foam tends to trap body heat more than a hybrid. People who are heavier than average also might find these mattresses lacking the support they need.
Latex Mattress
Latex mattresses often have superb temperature control, and provides a great deal of bounciness and excellent edge support. Compared to hybrids, these mattresses tend to be slightly more expensive. Latex is ideal for back and side sleepers, but it can feel too firm for some stomach sleepers. It supports heavy weight better than memory foam, but not as well as hybrids.
The biggest difference between latex mattresses and hybrids is in terms of motion isolation. While hybrids have a layer of individual springs to help isolate motion, latex does not. This can be a problem if you sleep with a partner who tosses and turns a lot.
Spring Mattress
Of all the different mattress types, none have more variety than traditional spring mattresses. This is largely a result of the fact that coil springs have been around for well over a century, while memory foam and latex are both newer technologies. Modern spring mattresses have good airflow, although they have no additional cooling method. They are firmer than most foam, latex, or hybrid mattresses, and are best for back sleepers.
Spring mattresses are usually the least expensive option on the market. However, they often don’t have warranties that match up to those offered by competitors in the industry. Few spring mattresses use individual pocket springs, which means that these models offer very little in the way of motion isolation. A spring mattress is ideal if you are shopping on a tight budget, don’t have problems getting to sleep at night, and sleep without a partner.
