  • Someone who sleeps hot at night

Who wouldn't suit the Emma Hybrid Mattress

  • Stomach sleepers won’t find this mattress comfortable
  • Someone who wants a firm mattress
  • A heavier person, as a mattress with coils will be a better choice

Why did we need a new mattress?

We had a baby last year, which has completely changed our sleeping routine and where me and partner sleeps. We quickly noticed that my partner is quite sensitive to baby crying, and when the baby cries during the night at 2am, my partner found it very hard to fall back asleep. So, after a few months, he decided to sleep on the sofa, as the disturbed sleep was starting to make him very tired.

The living room sofa was ok comfortable, but due to the dip in the middle of the sofa, my partner started to get back aches and pain. Sleeping on a sofa for long term isn’t ideal and will defiantly create back pains in the future. So, he finally decided to make room in the office and started looking for a new bed and mattress. We had a budget of under £500, for the bed frame and mattress, so we started looking at the top brands in the UK, Emma, Simba Sleep and Nectar.

Why an Emma Hybrid Mattress?

We looked through the 3 mattress brands, compared price and the types of mattress. Nectar was quickly eliminated, as they only offer a full memory foam mattress, but Nectar was tempting as they had a good deal at the time, offering free gifts with each mattress purchase. Next, we looked at Simba Mattress, they offered 2 hybrid models, the standard Hybrid® and the Hybrid® Pro. The Simba Hybrid® Mattress looked very appealing, was like the Emma Hybrid Mattress and offered great customer features, such as free delivery, 200 risk free night trial and 10-year guarantee. But ultimately it down to price for us, the Emma mattress also ticked all the boxes and in the end was cheaper than the Simba Hybrid® Mattress. The Simba Hybrid Mattress single size would have cost £382.85, whereas the Emma Hybrid Mattress was £284.50, so we brought it and here we are with this review.

Where to buy the Emma Hybrid Mattress?

At the time of writing, the UK was currently in lockdown, therefore a lot of the non-essential stores were closed, so it wasn’t possible for us to go into a shop and try the Emma Hybrid Mattress. Therefore we decided to buy the mattress directly from the Emma Mattress website, because if we found that it wasn’t right for us, then we could use the 200 Night Trial and contact Emma Mattress for advise on how to resolve this. We ordered the mattress on Saturday 13th March 2021, when we purchase it, the website said it would take 3 – 4 weeks to dispatch, however it dispatched a lot quicker and was delivered to our doorstep on Tuesday 16th March 2021.

How will it be delivered?

Emma Mattress offers free delivery on all sizes of their mattress, and use UPS, Rhenus or DPD to deliver your mattress. After purchasing the mattress, it said dispatch in 3-4 weeks, but it actually dispatched a lot quicker and we received the mattress 3 days after ordering. During the whole process, we received updates from the courier UPS and was told an estimated time of delivery. The delivery driver was very professional and delivered our mattress smoothly. Don’t be alarmed if the outer box looks a bit beaten, the mattress inside is wrapped very well. The box size was 37.5cm x 37.5cm x 145cm and wasn’t too heavy.

Lastly Emma can take away your existing old mattress away for £39, saving you a trip to the recycle disposer center, they do ask that you take the old mattress to the door, as they won’t be able to enter the property.

The Emma Hybrid Mattress has 4 layers, each one has it own purpose and works together to give your body the best sleep. First the mattress is wrapped in a cooling cover, this cover is made from moisture wicking UltraDry technology, which keep you cool and dry at night. This cover is also machine washable and is very easy to spot clean too. Next, we have the comfort layer, that is a soft and ultra-breathable Airgocell® foam, this allows for enhanced air flow and monitors your body temperature, keeping the mattress at an optimal temperature. The third layer gives advance pressure relief and is the steel micro-coils layer.  This layer gives pressure relief and increases breathability. The last 2 layers uses ZeroGravity viscoelastic memory foam and Supreme foam, which contours to your body and gives you support in all the right places.

Mattress Firmness

When looking for a mattress, the firmness is very important and should be taken into consideration, as it will affect your sleep and your back comfort. In terms of the firmness for the Bear Hybrid Mattress, it rates at 6.1 firmness, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. This means the Bear Hybrid Mattress is a medium to medium firm one and is ideal for side and back sleepers. The 5 mattress layers provide different support and reacts to your body’s pressure points, making is very comfortable for back and side sleepers. This mattress is also great for couples who are sleeping on the same mattress, the pocketed coil system reduces motion transfer and also provides great edge support. Making it easy for one of you to move in and out of the mattress and not disturb your partner.

Emma Hybrid Mattress Performance

With any new mattress, its important to test it for a period, we recommend trying a new mattress for at least 6 weeks, to allow your body to adjust. While trialling your new mattress, you should look out for a few things, the mattress edge support, motion transfer, off gassing, support, and comfort. We noted down how we found the Emma Hybrid Mattress, since receiving it.

Off Gassing

Off gassing is the new mattress smell, which comes once the mattress is unboxed and removed from the plastic packaging. This happens because the VOCs or volatile organic compounds breaks down, but don’t worry this chemical isn’t toxic.

After we unboxed our Emma Hybrid Mattress we noticed the off gassing smell immediately. We found the smell quite strong, but didn’t mind it too much, as this was normal and is the smell that comes with a new mattress. After setting up the mattress and placing it onto the bed frame, we left the window open and let the mattress air out for a day, before sleeping on it. Remember if you find after weeks the smell hasn’t gone, contact Emma and they can advise what to do. There is also 200-nights trial with all Emma mattresses, so if you find its not for you, then contact Emma.

Support

Its important that a mattress gives you the right support, otherwise this will cause discomfort for your body and may cause long term harm. We found the Emma Hybrid Mattress had very good support, as soon as we laid on it, we felt the foams contouring to our body, and we felt the bounce back. When we laid on our side, there was little bounce and we could feel the foam shifting to mould to our body shape.

Comfort

A mattress must be comfortable and provide good comfort. If you find that after 6 weeks, your new mattress isn’t comfortable, then you may be sleeping on the wrong mattress. With the Emma Hybrid Mattress, we found it very comfortable, although some may find it soft, we found that it was the right firmness for us. The mattress is also quite cooling and we haven’t woken up in sweats or anything.

Guarantee & Trial

The Emma Hybrid Mattress comes with 10 year guarantee, the guarantee starts as soon as your receive your item and it covers the stability and durability of the core materials within the item. The guarantee covers cracks, dents, or other damages to the foam, which have appeared, despite proper use of the mattress.

All of Emma mattresses comes with 200-night trial, so if you find its just not you, then contact Emma Mattress and they will arrange a collection and full refund. You don’t need to keep any of the plastic packaging or box, just the mattress will do.
