What is an innerspring mattress?

One of the oldest types of mattress, the innerspring mattress is properly most well-known. However, with all the new types of mattress appearing on the market, many are asking what is an innerspring mattress?

An innerspring mattress is a mattress which has a layer of coil springs. There are a few different types of coil springs, each having their pros and cons. Let’s have a quick look

Bonnell Spring

The Bonnell Spring type are the most common form of innerspring and are the cheapest. Bonnell Springs are in a shape of an hourglass and are joined to create a single coil or a slate of coils. The hourglass shape is a necessary design to give the mattress support and flexibility. Bonnell springs are also the cheapest and tend to wear out in 3 to 5 years, making these great for kids’ room, as kids will outgrow their mattress. They are also good for guest room, as they are a cheap option and won’t be used often in the guest room.

Pocket Coils

Pockets coils are the newest form of innersprings and are also called the following wrapped coils, encased spring and individually wrapped coils. This type of coil is best for those who share a mattress, as the pocket coils react individually to your body, and doesn’t move at once like the bonnell spring or the continuous coils.

Continuous Coils

Continuous coils are like Bonnell Coils, as it also uses a single length of coil, but it is shaped into a continuous S shape of springs. With the S shape structure, this allows the innersprings to work as one unit and provide great and stable support. But this type of innerspring isn’t ideal for those who share a mattress, as the continuous coils move together with any movement.

Innersprings in Hybrid Mattresses

With Hybrid Mattresses becoming more and more popular, you will find most Hybrid Mattresses have an innerspring layer, as this layer gives the mattress great durability and support. Its quite unlikely that you won’t find a mattress purely made from innersprings, as they tend to be slightly uncomfortable. That’s why a lot of mattress now have a combination build of innersprings and memory foam, as the innerspring layer offers great support and the memory foam gives great comfort.
